Learning Objectives

As a result of attending this course, participants should be able to:

  • Evaluate a group’s primary task and when it is on task or not.

  • Appraise how a group gets off task and who and what is overlooked when this occurs.

  • Formulate what is the “picture in the mind” of a group and how this affects its functioning

  • Assess how groups overlook complexity and have difficulty holding individual differences when forming their group identity.

  • Judge what parts of one’s own self are ignored or denied in order to be included in a group.

  • Examine how a group can assume that a particular worldview is correct or the “neutral” field from which the group creates together.

  • Differentiate the time, space, functional, and structural boundaries and resources that a group uses or ignores when working on its task.

  • Assess when a group is propelling someone to take on a particular role to serve the group’s needs.

  • Analyze how a group or person is authorized to act and analyze how we take up our own or another’s authority.

  • Formulate the similarities and differences between authority, power, and leadership in organizational life.

  • Evaluate how learning about the conscious and unconscious life of groups applies to clinical work with individuals, couples, and families.
